Tuesday Night Book Group
Tuesday, June 5 at 7:00pm
The Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss In the Garden of Beasts : Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson. In 1933 the first American ambassador to Nazi Germany took his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha with him to Berlin. Their story provides a stunning perspective on events as they unfolded, and helps to explain why the world did not recoginze the grave threat posed by Hitler.

On July 3rd we will discuss Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea, and of the Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists, and Fools, Including the Author, Who Went in Search of Them by Donovan Hohn.

Second Friday Book Discussion Group

S.J. Watson’s debut novel, Before I Go To Sleep, is a mesmerizing psychological thriller in which a young woman loses all of her memories every time she falls asleep. An accident has made her an amnesiac, so she begins a journal to jog her memory each day. What she writes causes her to fear for her safety and the suspension builds to a chilling climax. Bring a brown bag lunch at 11:30, Northland provides a beverage, and join our informal discussion which begins at noon. View previous group selections.

Serious Readers Group

This group, which meets on the fourth Saturday morning of each month, is enjoying good discussions on many of the books that have formed the outline of economic policies and political thought over the centuries. Foreign Film Series

This month’s feature presentation is from the Netherlands, Winter in Wartime.  It is 1945 in Nazi occupied Holland and the war has yet to impress Michiel.  He thinks the war is one big adventure.  When he stumbles upon and befriends a RAF pilot, the harsh reality of war sets in.  In a matter of days, his childhood is over.  He doesn’t know whom to trust, or if the courage to follow through.  The film is beautifully shot and suspenseful throughout.  So come join us on Wednesday, June 13 at 2 pm.  No reservation is required and refreshments will be served. Northland Knitters

Whether you're a beginning knitter, an occasional knitter or an expert addicted to the craft, you're welcome to join the fun of trading ideas and techniques and learning from each other in an informal time of doing one of your favorite things...knitting. We break for a snack and then keep on knitting and comparing notes. Bring your latest project and join us for the afternoon or evening Knitting Circle. No registration is required for this program. The evening knitting circle will meet back at the library.

Travel Film Series

This month we are off to Miami and the Caribbean. We'll tour Miami's art deco scene. In Key West, we'll tour Hemingway's house. From there, we go to Jamaica and view the beautiful Blue Mountains, where some of the best coffee comes from. We'll visit Jamaica's top tourist spot - Dunn's River Falls. Afterwards, we travel to Puerto Rico to enjoy a trip through old San Juan as well as the El Morro fortress. So come join us on Wednesday, June 20th at 2pm. No reservation is required.

Conversation Salon

Our conversation groups are growing in number as people gather to talk about subjects of interest that can range from local issues to national headlines to trends in education. Any topic is acceptable. Conversation salons provide us with the opportunity to share opinions, listen with respect to other’s opinions and learn from each other. Join us for some lively discussion. Classic Movie Series

The movie for June 27th is the classic Western, High Noon.

 

Amateur Astronomy Club

Whether you've recently become interested in astronomy or have had a life-long interest, this group enjoys sharing favorite astronomy websites, the best telescopes to purchase, recent developments in the science and good places to view the night skies.
