Our Adult Summer Reading Club began on June 9, but it's not too late
to join! Pick up your Summer Reading Club Record Booklet at the upstairs
reference desk. For each book you read, you may enter your name in one
of the many prize boxes that contain a gift certificate for various
North Hills area's fine restaurants or stores. Winners will be announced
after August 30th. We've chosen some interesting categories for your
reading pleasure once again. In celebration of Northland's 40th anniversary
year, a special prize will be available for one lucky winner who has
read 40 or more books. Let the reading begin!!
Boomer Bibliophiles...for cats and chicks who love to read
Begins Thursday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m.
A new book club is getting underway at Northland Public Library. We
will read current highly acclaimed fiction and non-fiction from authors
of the Baby Boomer generation (those born 1946-1964). While we'll focus
on the Boomer generation, readers of all ages are welcome. We will meet
at 7:00 on the second Thursday of every month at Northland Public Library,
beginning August 14th. Our first book is The Yiddish Policeman's Union
by Pulitzer-Prize winner (and ex-Pittsburgher) Michael Chabon. Publishers
Weekly called it a "murder-mystery speculative-history Jewish-identity
noir chess thriller". Call 412-366-8100x113 to request a copy, or use
the
online catalog to reserve
a copy online. For September, we will read The Last Lecture by Randy
Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow. We hope to see you Thursday, August 14. Registration
for this program in not necessary--just show up! If you have any questions
about "Boomer Bibliophiles", call the library 412-366-8100x113 or
email
Sydney Walden.
Dixieland Band
Monday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m.
Do you enjoy the sounds of Dixieland music? Developed in New Orleans, Dixieland is a blend of ragtime, blues and polyphonic improvisation and sets your feet to tapping with its lively rhythms.
A group of musicians from the North Suburban Symphony Orchestra have formed a separate Dixieland Band that has entertained and delighted many people who love that special style and sound. The band will be here at Northland Library on Monday evening, August 25 at 7:00 p..m. and we invite you to join us on the lawn outside the upstairs entrance for some lively music. Get ready to hum along to some of your favorites. (If the weather does not cooperate, we'll be inside in our downstairs meeting room.)
No registration is necessary.
Meet the Local Authors of the Chief, Gene Collier and Rob Zeller
Thursday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m.
THE CHIEF is a one-man play that re-enacts the life of famous Pittsburgher
Art Rooney, founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise. The
play has had successful runs at the Pittsburgh Public Theater and is
now available in print for the first time including photographs of Art
Rooney and his family, members of the Steelers' teams and scenes from
the play. Co-authors, Gene Collier, award-winning columnist for the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and Rob Zellers, education director at the
Pittsburgh Public Theater have written a warm, engaging portrait of
Rooney and his team as they gradually rose to prominence with a remarkable
run of playoff appearances beginning in 1972, capping the late '70's
with three Superbowl championships. The authors will share some interesting
and humorous accounts of their efforts in putting together the story
of Pittsburgh's beloved icon and the joy they shared in seeing local
actor, Tom Atkins, bring Art Rooney to life again in the first production
of their play. Signed copies of their book will be available for those
who wish to purchase them. Registration is required for this program.
Please register online through our
events calendar,
