Boomer Connections @ Northland Library

Boomer Connections is an initiative organized by NPL Staff to develop innovative, model programs that target services and resources to connect active “boomer” adults with new opportunities for learning, work, community service, and social interaction. To learn more, contact us at boomerconnections@einetwork.net.

We Want to Hear From You!
You are invited to participate in a focus group to “Let Your Voice Be Heard” on issues of aging and long term care services. The focus group is part of a project of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership for Aging (SWPPA), a regional group committed to the well-being of older adults who live in southwestern Pennsylvania. SWPPA wants to hear from caregivers regarding their attitudes and expectations for current and future aging services. This information will be used to inform leaders across southwestern PA about what current and future consumers of services expect from an aging service system. Participants will remain anonymous in all sharing of what we learn from the focus group discussions.

Who: The Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership for Aging, in partnership with Boomer Connections at Northland Library.
What: A focus group of approximately 12 individuals
When: Saturday, August 2, 2008 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Where: Northland Public Library, 300 Cumberland Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237

To register, please call (724)779-3200. Light refreshments will be served. This Program is made possible through the generous support of the Valley Care Foundation.

Boomers are being challenged to accept a new role as caregivers for a parent, spouse, or child. Some of us are known as the "sandwiched generation" of caregivers, caring for more than one loved one, usually a parent and child, or a parent and spouse.

Upcoming Programs:
Lifelinks logo LifeLinks for Caregivers is an educational outreach program to assist family caregivers by providing information on aging, caregiver issues and available resources within Allegheny County. This program is targeted to those currently caring for a loved one, those anticipating that responsibility in the future, and older adults themselves. More information...

Many boomers will be considering a change of career or lifestyle as they reach their 50s... perhaps following their dreams in a field they've always wanted to pursue or stepping out to launch their own business. Instead of planning for retirement, many baby boomers are considering changing their career paths, "recareering" themselves into completely different job descriptions.

Upcoming Programs:
Have you always dreamed about owning your own business? Have you wondered what it takes to strike out on your own and make it happen? This three-part series will help you to answer those questions, and to develop a business plan, to explore franchising, and to become familiar with legal issues of self-employment. Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.
Boomer Bibliophiles

A new book club is getting underway at Northland Public Library. We will read current highly acclaimed fiction and non-fiction from authors of the Baby Boomer generation (those born 1946-1964). While we'll focus on the Boomer generation, readers of all ages are welcome. We will meet at 7:00 on the second Thursday of every month at Northland Public Library, beginning August 14th.

Our first book is The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Pulitzer-Prize winner (and ex-Pittsburgher) Michael Chabon. Publishers Weekly called it a "murder-mystery speculative-history Jewish-identity noir chess thriller". Call 412-366-8100x113 to request a copy, or use the online catalog to reserve a copy online. For September, we will read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow. We hope to see you Thursday, August 14. Registration for this program in not necessary--just show up! If you have any questions about "Boomer Bibliophiles", call the library 412-366-8100x113 or email Sydney Walden.
