Boomer Connections: Civic Engagement

Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.

Marc Freedman, author and founder of Civic Ventures, said this about the Baby Boomers: "America's burgeoning older population is poised to become the new trustees of civic life in this country. These individuals have the time to care; they have the skills and experience required; they have the personal need to contribute in new ways. This match, between the untapped resources of older Americans and the needs of American communities, constitutes the great opportunity presented by America's aging."

Upcoming Civic Engagement Programs

  • Volunteer Speed Matching
    May 30, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm
Boomer Connections @Northland Library invites you to enjoy an early evening wine and cheese social with representatives from local nonprofit agencies. You’ll then meet with them in a “one-on-one” speed date” to find out how you can share your interests and expertise as a volunteer with their organization. You will have the opportunity to “speed interview” with up to 16 various agencies to learn if there is a match of skills, time and talent. A fast, fun event to find a great way to volunteer your own special talents!

This is an informal, drop-in event, pre-registration is not necessary. Please enter the library from the lower level, as the library will be closed at this time. For more information, contact Pat McCarthy at (412)366-8100x104 or email mccarthyp@einetwork.net.

NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS – Registration is available for this event, where volunteer recruitment meets speed dating! Potential volunteers will be attending to find out how they can share their interest and expertise with local nonprofits by meeting with them on a one-on-one "speed date." Print registration form.
