1968-2008: 40 Years of Learning and Discovery

2008 marks the 40th year of service for Northland Public Library.

When we first opened in October 1968 on Three Degree Road in Ross Township, there were 16,000 items in our collection, and a lot of doubts on how many people would even come to the library. Today, there are nearly 200,000 items in our collection, including books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and other items--plus we have access to more than 40 online databases and more than three dozen computers available for public use with high-speed Internet access.

Throughout the year we will be celebrating our Anniversary with profiles of important library events and people, plus special displays and programs highlighting the development of Northland. We hope you enjoy this look at our past as we prepare to serve the region for the next 40 years and beyond.

Where are they now?

Over the years, hundreds of people have been employed at Northland. We would like to get in touch with as many as we can to invite them to return and help celebrate our 40th anniversary. We are planning a staff reunion here at the library on Sunday, August 10th. If you or someone you know used to work here, will you please take a minute to send us some contact information?

Please send the following information to Northland Public Library, Attn. Staff Reunion or via e-mail (use "Staff Reunion" as the subject):

In early 1983 Northland installed a coin-operated Apple II+ micro computer for public use. The computer included 2 disk drives, a color monitor and a dot matrix printer. The charge was $1.00 for 15 minutes and for an additional charge patrons could reserve time on the computer. Patrons were required to pass a proficiency test to be permitted to use the computer.

Today the library’s many computers are free to use, with Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007 and high speed internet connections, CD burners, some DVD burners, USB ports, black & white and color printers, and a digital scanner. Free wireless internet service is also provided to use with your own laptop. Northland's computer center has trained staff to assist you anytime the library is open, and we offer a wide variety of free computer classes each month.
