About Us: Collection & Services

Northland Library has approximately 175,000 items in its collection. All items except for in-house reference materials are available for check out. Most of Northland's items may be reserved (if they're checked out to another patron) or renewed (if you haven't yet finished it).

The Library offers many free services to make access to our materials easier and provides other services to further our mission as a community resource for informational and recreational reading materials.

Our Collection

  • Books
    Northland has more than 145,000 books including large collections of picture books, adult fiction, paperbacks, and large print books. Whether it's the latest best-seller or a how-to-wallpaper guide, we probably have the book you want.
  • Talking Books
    Northland has more than 5,000 audio books, in cassette and CD formats. This collection includes 1,000 children's audio books.
  • Videos & DVDs
    More than 2,000 entertainment programs are available in both VHS and DVD formats. There are also more than 2,000 nonfiction and instructional videos, which are shelved with the nonfiction book collections.
  • Music
    A wide variety of musical recordings is available on 4,000 cassettes and CDs for both children and adults.
  • Databases
    Access to more than 30 online resources is available from the library or from your home (using your library card). Visit the online reference desk for more information.
  • Magazines
    Northland subscribes to more than 350 magazines and hundreds of additional titles are available online. Our magazines are kept for one year. View current magazine subscriptions
  • Newspapers
    Northland subscribes to all of the local newspapers, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post (Sunday edition), Barron's (weekly). Newspapers are kept for 3 months.
Reference and Computer Services

  • Reference Assistance
    Reference service is available in person and by telephone during all hours that the library is open. Reference desks are located on both floors of the library. In addition, our Email Reference service allows librarians to respond to reference questions via email.
  • Reserves
    Items that are currently checked out to other patrons may be reserved at a reference desk, over the telephone, or online. You will need your library card to place something on reserve.
  • Interlibrary Loans
    Items that Northland does not own may be requested from other libraries at either reference desk, over the telephone, or with our online request form. You will need your library card to place a request.
  • Magazine Fax Service
    If you need an article from a magazine to which Northland does not subscribe, we may be able to have the article faxed from another area library. Please visit the upstairs reference desk for details.
  • Internet Access
    Northland's computer center offers free internet access for public use. All stations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Time may be limited to ensure fair access for all patrons. In addition, the library offers free wireless internet access for patrons with their own notebook computers.
  • Computer Instruction
    Northland's computer center offers introductory-level classes in both one-on-one and small group environments each month.
